Handy booklet for Tendring residents

Do you know where your Neighbourhood Action Panel is being held? Would you know what to do if you were approached by a bogus caller?

A handy guide containing the answers to these questions and more is being delivered to homes in Tendring this month.

The Tendring Community Safety Handbook, funded by Tendring’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership, covers all aspects of crime reduction, anti-social behaviour and community safety.

The booklet contains information on Neighbourhood Wardens, Neighbourhood Watch, vehicle crime, anti-social behaviour and bogus callers as well as important local and national contact numbers.

Leanne Thornton, Community Safety Manager for Tendring District Council, said: “The booklet was so successful last year and we received really amazing feedback from Tendring residents, that we decided to bring it up to date and issue another one this year. It is a really helpful guide to all aspects of community safety in Tendring and contains a wealth of information for anyone facing issues in their community.

“Perhaps you want to know how to get rid of unsightly graffiti on a wall round the corner or are worried about nuisance youths. Maybe you want to find out more about your local Neighbourhood Watch; it’s all in the handbook,” she added.

Also supporting the handbook and contributing useful information is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, Tendring Careline, Tendring District Council Waste Crusader, North East Essex NHS, Tendring District Council Considerate Parking Initiative, Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children, TDC Housing and Benefits and Revenue Services.

Copies of the handbook will also be available at Council offices, libraries, police stations and Citizen Advice Bureaus across the district.

If you do not receive your copy or you would like extra copies or more information about the booklet, please contact Leanne Thornton on 01255 686353. A copy can also be downloaded by following this link: Tendring Community Safety Handbook 2010-2011

DAY OF ACTION - 30TH APRIL - HARWICH

Park Pavilion, Barrack Lane, Harwich, CO12 3NS

Bringing the Community Together

The Community Action Day was a great success. Service providers such as Essex Police, Essex Fire & Rescue, Tendring District Council, Essex County Council and many other agencies (over 30 altogether) worked in Partnership to make the Day of Action in Harwich happen.

During the day residents had the opportunity to meet local agencies at Park Pavilion, this was where more than 30 dogs were microchipped by the local Dog Wardens.

Among Police Operations being carried out from early in the morning until late at night, which included speeding checks, The Essex Police Horse Unit horses, Bella and Rosa patrolled the area in the afternoon and were a hit with the local school children. More than 5 tonnes of rubbish was cleared by Veolia, assisted by the local Community Payback scheme managed by Essex Probation and more than 50 pieces of graffiti were cleared off the walls in Harwich. Essex Fire & Rescue door knocked in the area and offered free smoke alarms and fire safety advice and the Health Visitors were on hand in their SOS bus and gave free Health Checks to local residents.

In the afternoon their was a football area available for local youths which proved a popular activity.

Tuesday 23rd March 2010 - The Essex Police and NACRO Soccer Tournament - Clacton Town Centre

2010 Strategic Assessment

Tendring Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership has produced a Strategic Assessment. The aim of the Strategic Assessment is to analyse the current priorities around crime, anti-social behaviour, substance misuse and behaviour adversely affecting the environment and to identify future gaps and risks that impact upon Tendring District and our communities.

The Strategic Assessment will enable the Tendring CDRP and its partner agencies to execute various options for enforcement, early intervention, education, prevention, deterrence and public reassurance. The development of robust, co-ordinated plans for tackling crime and disorder originates from a combination of local and national initiatives.

Locally, agencies have recognised for some time the need to address the issues which often feature top of the list of public concerns. The assessment is about performance led information, analysis and data that inform Chief Officers from the Council, Police, County Council, Primary Care Trust and Fire and Rescue to identify neighbourhood priorities within Tendring.

This will provide the foundation for the Partnership Plan that will set out how neighbourhood priorities will be met. Ultimately the purpose of the assessment is to make Tendring District an even safer place to live, work, do business and visit.

The Strategic Assessment and Annual Partnership Plan have been developed in line with the Tendring CDRP mission statement which is:

‘to reduce both the incidence and fear of crime and disorder and make the area a safer place to live’.

Projects

Firewatch

The Firewatch Scheme is active in Tendring. Firewatch is an Essex Fire and Rescue Service led initiative and seeks to reduce the number of arsons and deliberate fire related incidents.

Whilst fire related matters are comparatively few in relation to other forms of damage and anti social behaviour the results can be devastating and long lasting for both individuals involved and the communities surrounding them.

Firewatch is an anonymous phone line which is monitored and advertised by the Fire Service. The purpose of the line is to receive information which might potentially lead to information that solves outstanding crimes involving fire or identifies those people who may be setting fires.

Firewatch is a scheme which intends to assist in the reduction of fire setting, anti social behaviour and which potentially identifies those likely to commit offences.
The partnership approach to this scheme will allow the Police to investigate crimes where applicable, the Fire Service to divert potential offenders and the Anti Social Behaviour Teams to work with those same people.

Borderline

In agreement with the Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership it was decided to develop a structured programme to identify the types of criminal activity young people are involved with. With this in mind, it was also agreed that the programme should be aimed at Year 8 (13 year olds) as part of an early intervention to deter crime at a later stage.

The project is an early intervention and educational scheme, to make the young persons aware of their behaviour and how it affects others, in order to prevent and deter them from criminal activity in the future. The Borderline Project is intended to reduce crime, and anti social behaviour, as well as raising awareness of the consequences of crime.

In summary, this project can help assist young people to identify with the consequences of a criminal act, how it affects the victim/s, the affect on family life, the effect on a community and it promotes a general understanding to raise awareness. It will also raise individuals self esteem, increase self confidence, improve social skills and enhance personal development.

The Borderline project will bring together professionals working towards the same or similar goals and will be seen in the community as a Multi Agency approach to reduce crime & disorder but working together for a better community.

NACRO - Youth Mentoring

The Youth Mentor Project has been delivering a high standard of support and mentoring to young people from the age of 10 – 17 years throughout Tendring over the last four years. CDRP fund two Youth Mentors, who are fully trained counsellors with a Diploma in Humanistic Person Centred Counselling and Professional Studies, that provide outreach support for young people. They work in partnership with many professional agencies, in order to provide a standard of excellence, so they may progress positively into adulthood by giving them a sense of purpose.

This project has proved its viability every year and statistics from the Police for 2008 evidenced that we exceeded our target of reducing re offending by 20% by 35% to 55%.
A Report from the Youth Offending Team May 2009 had shown that 83% of medium to high offenders have not reoffended to date.

This evidence is testament to the effective service we deliver to our young people.
We have also developed a mediation and family reconciliation programme which affects at least 50% of our referrals. This development has been more evident over the last year and has shown a need for additional funding to be made available to increase the level of support and intervention as often this proves to be the root of the young persons dysfunctional and anti social behaviour.

The Project works in partnership with over 40 agencies through Tendring and Essex wide to deliver a fully integrated person centred approach. Evidence of the high standard of partnership work we deliver is verified by the letters/emails of support and also a selection of thank you letters and cards and Feedback questionnaires from the young people that have benefitted from our service.
